Internet Connection
This is one of the most important resources in a modern home. There are various technologies used to provide internet in Australia. These include wireless phone network (4G), ADSL (over phone copper), Satellite and Wireless. Recently our government has started rolling out the NBN network across Australia. This network uses various technologies to achieve a modereate internet speed. It so happens that our property is located in range of wireless NBN.
Another Approach
While we could get connected to the wireless NBN connection, our family living next door has a reliable wireless internet connection to the NBN. They are willing to share this connection with us. This is great as it reduces the on-going operating costs for both of us.
The hardware
Being the local computer technician in town helps greatly in the implementation of a wireless network. We currently use a Ubiquity edgemax 4 port router connected to the NBN co wireless modem. The Edgemax router offers great preformance and reliablitity over cheaper TPLink and FRitzBox models. We then pair this with a Ubiquity Bullet for a omni-direction coverage using the airMax proprietry protocol. This is then recieved using a Ubiquity Nanostation. This then goes into a router and NAT. behind this firewall sits my house. The wifi in my house is served by a ubiquity Unifi AC that provides wonderful throughput. As you can tell we have found the ubiquity equipment to be of great quality and much more reliable then some of the cheaper equipment. Trust us, we found out the hard way!
